I cannot understand how Ed Miliband allowed the Labour Party conference to be held on the holiest day of the Jewish year. In some ways it is entirely symptomatic of a propensity of British Jews to keep their heads down, don’t ask for anything, so that nobody will notice that you are a Jew. I guess that is complex, really, because it is more in relation to religious observance than politics and life style.

This has had the unfortunate effect of segregating British Jews into the practising and non practising. In the United States it is much more common for Jewish People to be ’twice a year'Jews and go to temple only on the New Year and then celebrate the other festivals at home. The British Jews are more inclined to the all or nothing approach. What’s the answer? Better education to start with. There is plenty of time set aside in the National Curriculum for Religious Education, but teachers need inschool training in order to be able to deliver meaningful modules on Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. This education then needs to be directly implemented into the life of the school. Assemblies should mark the global religious holidays whether or not their are pupils there from that religion. Every kid needs to know when Eid ul-Fitr whether or not they know people who are Muslim, because knowing when Muslim holidays are can help them make friends.

It is important to be aware of the numbers and realize that there are far more Jews in the United States, and the USA is by definition not a Christian country like the UK is. This is why, in the UK Jewish people that want to practice tend to live in tight knit communities in the bigger cities. At the end of the day understanding everybody’s customs and religion makes us happier people and better neighbours.
